The move from primary to secondary maths is bigger than most parents expect. In Year 6, the work is mostly arithmetic and word problems in familiar contexts. By Year 7, the work is algebra, proportion, geometric reasoning and statistics โ and the questions are written in a register that takes even strong Year 6 leavers a term to settle into. Supporting KS3 maths at home in Years 7, 8 and 9 is less about re-teaching what school teaches, and more about holding the line on the things that quietly fall apart when a child stops practising.
A short, honest guide.
The KS3 mental shift
Three things change when a child walks into Year 7 maths. They are worth naming, because each one has a different home response.
- Algebra becomes the main language. By Christmas of Year 7, the questions are written in letters, not numbers. A child who was fluent at arithmetic can still be brought to a halt by "solve 3x + 5 = 17" the first time they meet it. The work is no longer about getting the right number โ it is about manipulating an unknown.
- Fractions and decimals grow up. The work moves from "what is 1/4 of 20" to operating with fractions, converting between fractions and decimals fluently, and using ratio and proportion to solve problems. The arithmetic is harder; the thinking is denser.
- Geometry starts asking "why". Instead of "name this shape", the questions ask "prove these angles are equal" or "show this triangle is isosceles." Reasoning, not naming.
If your child is finding Year 7 hard, the most likely reason is one of these three โ and a small amount of focused work on whichever one is wobbly makes a real difference.
What parents usefully do
Secondary teachers are much better than primary teachers at teaching maths. The instinct to "sit down and explain it" is usually wrong by Year 7 โ a parent's explanation can contradict the teacher's method, and a child ends up more confused.
What actually helps:
- Hold the line on fluency. Five minutes of times tables or arithmetic drill a week keeps the calculation speed up. By Year 8, the child who has stopped practising arithmetic is the child who takes three minutes to multiply two-digit numbers, and that is half the lesson gone before the algebra starts.
- Be a calm audience. "Show me what you did today" is better than "let me help." A child explaining their work back is the most reliable way to find out what they have and have not understood.
- Ask about the homework class, not the homework itself. Secondary children often sit in classes of thirty. If they didn't catch the method, the homework will not be enough to repair it.
What does not help:
- Re-teaching the lesson at home in a different style.
- Buying a workbook that pushes ahead of what the school is covering.
- Long revision sessions the night before a test. A tired Year 7 child who has been drilled for two hours performs worse the next day, not better.
A 10-minute weekly routine
The home routine that earns its keep at KS3 is shorter than the KS2 one. Ten minutes, once or twice a week, is plenty โ and it is a different shape.
- Five minutes of arithmetic fluency drill โ the kind of work that keeps calculation speed alive without teaching new content. Multiplying and dividing two-digit numbers, fraction/decimal conversions, the four operations on negative numbers.
- One problem a week that takes ten minutes to think about, even if it takes thirty. The kind of problem where the method is not obvious: a ratio problem, a percentage word problem, an algebra puzzle. The point is the thinking, not the answer.
- Look at what school set that week โ and only that. Markers, classwork, exit tickets. Anything the teacher has already commented on is the priority. A parent's job is to amplify what school said, not to add to it.
What changes between Year 7 and Year 9
A few things shift across KS3 that are worth knowing without acting on.
- Year 7 is mostly settling in. A child who is wobbly in autumn term will very often be fine by spring. Holding the line on the routine is enough.
- Year 8 is when the algebra really lands. GCSE preparation begins quietly. The arithmetic drill matters more, not less.
- Year 9 is when options are chosen and the pace picks up. The child who has kept the ten-minute-a-week habit through Years 7 and 8 sails into it. The child who hasn't is the one who starts Year 9 saying "I was never any good at maths."
The point of KS3 maths help at home is not to teach Year 9 content in Year 7. It is to keep the calculation engine running so the new content has something to land on.
