By the time a child reaches Year 9, most parents have quietly stepped back from maths. The work looks unfamiliar โ algebraic fractions, surds, trigonometry, simultaneous equations โ and the instinct is to leave it to the teacher. That instinct is mostly right: a parent's explanation in Year 9 is more likely to confuse than help. But there is still a useful job to do, and done consistently, it is the difference between a child who passes GCSE foundation maths comfortably and one who scrapes through.
Here is what GCSE maths at home actually looks like for parents of children in Years 9 and 10.
What the GCSE foundation paper actually tests
The foundation tier of GCSE maths (grades 1 to 5) is not what most parents remember from their own GCSE. It is not the "I can do long division and I am finished" paper. Roughly half the marks are on topics that did not exist in the old syllabus in this form: algebraic reasoning, ratio and proportion in unfamiliar contexts, multi-step worded problems, and a non-calculator paper that catches out children who have stopped practising arithmetic.
The five things that carry the most marks on GCSE foundation maths:
- Arithmetic under time pressure. Multiplying and dividing two- and three-digit numbers, fractions of amounts, percentage change. Foundation paper 1 is non-calculator. The child who has stopped doing any arithmetic by Year 9 is the child who loses fifteen minutes on working out 17ร8.
- Rearranging and solving equations. The question "solve 3x + 4 = 19" appears every year. So does "make x the subject of y = mx + c". A child who is wobbly on these in Year 9 still has wobbly on them in Year 11.
- Ratios, proportion and percentages in context. "In a recipe, the ratio of flour to sugar is 5:3. If I use 240g of flour, how much sugar?" โ same maths every year, different story. The skill is recognising the structure, not doing the arithmetic.
- Geometry essentials. Area, perimeter, volume. Pythagoras and basic trigonometry for the higher-end foundation questions. These are mechanical โ five minutes of drill a week keeps them alive.
- Interpreting data. Reading tables, charts, scatter graphs. Less to memorise, more to read carefully.
If your child is firm on those five, the foundation paper is a pass. If any of them is wobbly, that is the work between now and the mock exams.
What parents usefully do at GCSE
The instinct in Year 9 is to help in the same way you helped in Year 6 โ sit down, talk through the question, explain what to do. By GCSE maths at home, that almost never works. Secondary teachers have taught these topics for years; their methods are not what most parents remember from school. A parent's explanation in a different style usually creates a second, competing method in the child's head, and the result on the paper is the wrong one.
What does help:
- Hold the line on arithmetic. Five minutes of mental maths two or three times a week keeps the non-calculator paper honest. By Year 10, the child who has stopped practising arithmetic is the one who runs out of time on paper 1.
- Be a calm audience for past-paper review. Not the working through, but the marking after. "Show me which questions you weren't sure of, and why" is more useful than "let me show you the method."
- Watch the homework class, not the homework. A Year 9 child who did not catch the method in a thirty-pupil class will not catch it in the homework that night. The question to ask is "do you know which method the teacher wanted" โ not "did you finish the sheet."
- Notice the sleep pattern around mocks. A child who starts sleeping badly in November is not struggling with the maths. They are struggling with the pressure. The parent's job is to keep it in proportion.
What does not help:
- Buying a higher-tier revision guide and working ahead. Foundation tier children passed on the foundation paper because they were confident with foundation content. Pushing ahead is demoralising.
- Long evening revision sessions in Year 10. Consolidation is better done in forty-minute blocks across the week, not in two-hour bursts on a Sunday.
- Quizlet-style flashcard drilling of formulae. The formulae for foundation maths are short. Memorising them without practising the questions that use them produces a child who can write E = mcยฒ but cannot answer a GCSE maths question with it.
A short weekly routine at GCSE
The GCSE maths revision that earns its keep at home is shorter than parents expect. It is also more structured.
- Two forty-minute sessions a week, one arithmetic and one past-paper question. The arithmetic session is non-negotiable: divide, multiply, fraction of amount, percentage of amount, simple equation. The past-paper question is one, not a paper. Pick a question they got wrong last time, do it again this week, and mark it together.
- One "explain it back" session a fortnight. A child explaining a topic they have just been taught, in their own words, off the book, is the most reliable way to know whether they have it. If they cannot explain it, they do not have it. The teacher's job is to teach it; the parent's job here is to find out.
- One past paper a fortnight from spring of Year 10 onwards. One. Not one a week in Year 11. Past-paper fatigue is real and the child who has done twenty papers by February is doing worse on paper twenty-one than they did on paper one.
- Stop the night before. Sleep is the highest-leverage revision tool in Year 11. A child who slept ten hours and reviewed three formulae in the morning performs better than one who crammed for four hours and slept six.
That is around an hour and a half a week of focused home work on top of school. Done for a year, it covers most of what the foundation paper tests.
What changes between Year 9 and Year 10
A few things shift that are worth knowing without acting on.
- Year 9 is mostly settling into the new pace. A child who is wobbly in the autumn term will very often be fine by spring. Holding the routine is enough.
- Year 10 is when the GCSE content starts to stack up. The mock exams in summer of Year 10 are the first real signal of where the child stands. If the mock result is a concern, that is the term to lean into the routine, not Year 11.
- Year 11 is when the past-paper rhythm kicks in. By spring of Year 11, the child who has done the routine for two years is sitting the final papers calmly. The child who has not is starting revision in February and is behind before they begin.
The point of GCSE maths help at home is not to teach Year 11 content in Year 9. It is to keep the arithmetic engine running and the past-paper rhythm familiar so that, when the mocks arrive, the child sits them like a normal exam rather than a crisis.
A note on getting GCSE maths help
